Crux

By Richard Mather

I am a body of sin bent beneath the Jerusalem sun.

Sin is in my heart and mouth,

my hair and my breath.

And as I climb this high hill,

sin presses hard on my brain like a tumour

and the world stumbles.

Lord, I have seen Ezekiel’s whirlwind

glowing amber

and wheels within wheels

going in all directions.

I saw the appearance of one

who looks back at me from still waters.

Behold the lamb who is slain at the root,

whose blood is the clay of a new creation.

And as a I climb this road of broken hearts and bones,

I wait for the wheels to turn

and for the waters to part,

and for the lamb to return to its mother.

I am a body of sin hanging beneath the Jerusalem sun.

Sin is in my throat and liver,

my limbs and my eyes.

And now that the final nail has been driven in,

sin burrows deep in my soul like a corkscrew

and the devil rejoices.

Adonai, Adonai, I have seen your face

growing dark

and tears upon tears

falling from the sky.

Do not abandon me

or uncleave your glory from my name.

Behold the lamb who is slain at the root

Whose blood is the stuff of a new kingdom.

And as I give up my holy spirit,

receive me as an offering in your heavenly temple

And forgive those who know not

what they have done or failed to do.
