By Richard Mather
In the day before God brought this world into being
the heavenly hosts were reclining
in the tent of the sun.
“It is for the sake of his goodness that God must create the world,” said Love.
“And all shall dwell in a garden of paradise.”
“Not so. God must create the world for the sake of his grace,” said Spirit.
“And all the earth shall shine like Heaven.”
“Neither,” spoke Torah. “He will create the world
for the sake of his will
and contract his presence
into it.
“For is not said that ‘I will meet with you
and speak with you from above the ark-cover,
from between the two k’ruvim
which are on the ark for the testimony’?”
God groaned and nodded at Torah. ‘Tzimtzum it is. Tzimtzum it will be.’
