By Richard Mather
Men emerged from the sea,
Fish from the buxom earth,
Birds from the volcano's mouth,
The herds from the sky.
Flames leapt out of rivers
And ice grew from fire.
One day an apple from a tree of its kind,
The next day an orange,
A tree that can bear any fruit,
A tree that is upside down,
The sky clasping its root.
