Extinction

By Richard Mather

In the beginning was the Act:

an act of will: the death of God…

Horrified at his own existence,

God craved non-being.

but rather than falling asleep like a book

the way a cell-cloistered monk might do,

there was to God an idea.

Existence tempered by entropy.

And so God passed into the ten

thousand things. Galaxies, time and space,

quarks, protons, and atoms, excrement

and bacteria, earth and water, predator

and predated, vertebrate and invertebrate,

fangs, flesh, claws, fins, ketosis.

A horror show of desire and disease,

death outstripping life.

In five billion years the sun will run

out of hydrogen, all thought will be gone.

And eventually all matter will disintegrate

and disappear into thin silence --

Negation without remainder.

Nothing then.
