By Richard Mather
Before the beginning:
infinite and timeless unity:
Einfache Einheit, God-as-One.
Frustrated like a text folded
In on itself; language squared.
Rather than falling asleep
like a book,
there was to God
an idea.
And so unity passed
into the ten thousand things,
of quarks protons
galaxies, time and space, history
and nature, predator
and predated,
vertebrate and invertebrate,
fangs flesh claws, ketosis,
a cosmos brimming bacteria.
