By Richard Mather
God was walking in the heavens when a snake in the grass
emerged from a black hole between Mecca and Medina.
Speaking from the side of his mouth snake let loose sin and death
and the world twisted in his grasp.
After six days, earth was blown to bits
and buried beneath a pile of newsprint.
And the Lord tore his clothes and made for himself
a garment of lamentations.
Almost sated, sin and death sought out God,
who was trembling beneath a tree in heaven.
And they scoffed and gobbled him before turning
on the sun and moon,
and then each other.
And the universe was void of any living thing,
except, of course, for snake
and you and me, obviously.
