By Richard Mather
Fixed to its being by the name I give it,
I turn what was pliable and sticky
Into something reified, a thing.
Nouns make substance matter.
Naming is forming. It informs the material.
The spoken word affirms it.
Words give form and purpose to matter.
Making the virtual actual:
The incarnation of the word.
Substance is unlimited, a dynamic continuum.
Turning the inconsistent into the consistent,
I count it as one.
Plugged into a network of relations
That already precede it, the thing
Is now an object in a forcefield
Of affects, perceptions, facts,
And all the other topographical
Features that make up the situation.
